Area Stage Company (ASC) will present a gritty new take on Stephen Sondheim’s ghoulish classic musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, just in time for audiences seeking a spooky thrill during Halloween season!
Staged by the same director, cast, and crew of ASC’s critically acclaimed, sold-out productions of Annie and, of most recent, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Sweeney Todd will be set in Area Stage Company’s Black Box Theatre providing an eerie and immersive backdrop for audiences.
“We are once again redefining the way we present classical theatre pieces in a way that brings the audience deeper into the story,” said Maria Banda-Rodaz, Executive Director of Area Stage Company.
Directing this reimagined haunting classic musical is Giancarlo Rodaz, a rising South Florida theatre star and director whose recent productions have earned him a fresh round of critical praise.
“Taking what we have learned from our recent successful productions of Annie and Beauty and the Beast, we are thrilled to once again create a world that truly captures and immerses audiences,” says Rodaz. “If ever there was a tale to set against the rich darkness of our Black Box Theatre for a truly transformative and thrilling experience, Sweeney Todd is it.”
Book by Hugh Wheeler, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Sweeney Todd became a worldwide sensation, winning eight Tony Awards (including best Musical) after its 1979 Broadway premier. Since then, it has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences around the globe.
This deliciously macabre masterpiece tells the tale of Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, thrillingly played by ASC cast regular Frank Montoto, who returns to nineteenth century London to seek revenge against the lecherous Judge Turpin, portrayed by Maxime Prissert, who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His quest leads him to Mrs. Lovett, played by the delightful Katie Duerr, the resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck changes when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires a unique recipe that has customers lining up for her now tasty meat pies.
Rounding out the cast are Luke Surretsky as Anthony Hope, Greta Hicks as Johanna Barker, John Luis as Beadle Bamford, Imran Hylton as Adolfo Pirelli, and Michelle Gordon as the Beggar Women.
Sweeney Todd is a story of love, loss, obsession, and murder. Let the carnage begin!!
