Area Stage Presents: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Take the worst kids in the history of the world, let them loose on some stressed out families preparing their beloved annual Nativity play, mix it all up with a bunch of drama-loving kids ages seven to seventeen, and what do you have? Area Stage Conservatory’s production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, an uproarious and unexpected take on the holiday spirit, running Dec. 8 to 17 at the Area Stage Company in Coral Gables.

Author Barbara Robinson based her play on her bestselling 1972 book, which tells the story of the Herdmans, six rambunctious, impoverished siblings who terrorize the kids in town, invade the church looking for free snacks, and stay to take over the traditional Christmas play. As indignant mothers, a perplexed new director, and confused children cope with the newcomers, the Herdmans—and their community—learn about tolerance, generosity, and the meaning at the heart of the holiday. First produced in 1982, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever has become a beloved modern classic.

Director Giancarlo Rodaz, whose exhilarating rendition of Heathers for ASC last spring drew sell-out crowds, has set the group’s latest production in the 80’s with mullet haircuts, mom jeans, Gameboys, and awkward yearning.

“It’s a tragically mediocre middle-of-nowhere town where life revolves around church,” says Rodaz. “The town’s spirit is tested by the Herdmans, who challenge their values and their idea of Christmas.”

The show also boasts a musical finale by Broadway choreographer Adam Cates, whose credits include associate choreographer on Anastasia and the Tony-nominated A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. The cast of 41 children is drawn from Area Stage Conservatory’s acclaimed music theater program, which fosters aspiring young artists from kindergarten through college.
