Best-selling author, James Grippando, recently addressed a packed house at Coral Gables Congregational Church helping the Philanthropic Education Organization raise funds to assist with educational goals of women, having distributed more than $435 million in assistance though six philanthropies and one foundation.
Grippando’s fans not only enjoyed a lovely reception before the program but also had a chance to have their books signed. Grippando’s most recent book, Grave Danger, is another thriller featuring his legendary criminal defense attorney Jack Swyteck who defends a single mother accused of kidnapping her own child in a perilous international case. If you missed this event, Books and Books may have signed copies.
In other local news, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables takes a break from volunteer events every 5th Friday for a social hosted by a club member. January’s “5th Friday” was held at J Bolado Clothiers, the store of RCCG past president Carlos Bolado and Jose Bolado. While everyone, especially the men, enjoyed checking out the exquisite suits, shirts and accessories, they also enjoyed fellowship and some great food and drinks.
Among the many Rotarians and friends gathered for the affair were event organizer Sally Baumgartner Goodman, Terri Bolado, Hadley Williams, Jennifer Fila, Yolanda Woodbridge, Greg Petrino, Bill and Chie Quesenberry, Carol and Jasper Brock, Maria Korvick and Jim Skinner, Teri Long, Jerry Kavulich, and Sue Padalino.
By the way, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets weekly for lunch at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables and visiting Rotarians are always welcomed but they request an RSVP. Lunch is $47 and every meeting offers wonderful speakers.
Most recently, the founder and CEO of A Safe Haven for Newborns (ASHFN), Nick Silverio, impressed the club members with the amazing work the non-profit is doing to save babies from abandonment and possible death in attention to helping pregnant women before and after births including aiding with adoption if that is the women’s choice. ASHFN has its upcoming golf tournament on May 16 that is always a great event.
On the foundation scene, more than 830 tickets were sold for this year’s Coral Gables Community Foundation Tour of the Kitchens. This has become a crowd favorite and it is a full day affair. This year’s home kitchens were amazing as were the various food offerings that began at Merrick Park for registration in the morning and carried on to every home wrapping up around 2:30 p.m. and then back to Merrick Park.
