Bike Walk Coral Gables, a non-profit organization formed in 2011, recently was named Bike Business of the Year by the Florida Bicycle Association. The award ceremony took place on Feb. 24 at the Coral Gables City Commission regular meeting.
The commission also proclaimed March as “Bike305 Month” at that same meeting.
Citing Bike Walk Coral Gables’ efforts and achievements for cyclists and assisting in shaping a vision for Florida as a state where cycling is safe, respected and encouraged as a means of transportation and recreation, Becky Afonso, executive director of the Florida Bicycle Association, congratulated the organization. Bike Walk Coral Gables’ mission is to promote a safe and friendly environment for cyclists and pedestrians by advocating programs and events to educate the community. The group envisions a Coral Gables community that values cycling and walking as safe and healthy forms of transportation and recreation. Bike Walk Coral Gables also promotes the accessibility of streets and trails for cyclists and pedestrians so they may enjoy Coral Gables’ natural beauty and lush canopy.
Bike Walk Coral Gables annual event, Gables Bike Day, took place on Mar. 1. In partnership with the Coral Gables Museum, Bike Walk Coral Gables provides family-friendly, monthly bicycle tours to places of interest in Coral Gables. Held on the third Sunday of every month, the tours are led by experienced bicycle leaders on safe routes to the varied destinations.
