Boyhood Home of George Merrick undergoing restoration, renovations

In addition to the ongoing renovations to Coral Gables’ historic civic plazas, the boyhood home of city founder George Merrick is getting some needed TLC.

The Coral Gables Merrick House, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is undergoing restoration and renovations at a total cost of approximately $1.6 million. The restoration efforts include the restoration repair of all exterior wood doors, windows and screens, the repair of deteriorated cement plaster surfaces, and the reconstruction of the interior historic columns.

The main house is getting a new roof and the repair of its exterior stairs. Renovations to the garage include new wood doors and ADA-compliant toilet rooms as well as a roof replacement.

The project is scheduled to be completed by this summer.
