Randy Hoff is running for the Group V seat on the Coral Gables City Commission in the Apr. 11 municipal election.
Hoff was born in Miami in 1964. He applied to the Coral Gables Police Department and was hired in July 1988. Since his first day, Hoff has been committed to making the Gables a safe place for all the residents. During his tenure with the Coral Gables Police Department he served in the Marine Patrol Unit, Underwater Recovery, Crisis Management Team, Data Management, Background Investigations, Training and the Field Training Unit.
In 2005, he was elected vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police and was then reelected to five consecutive terms. In 2010, he was elected to the Coral Gables General Employee Retirement Board as the “At-Large” Representative and elected chair in 2015. Working in these varied positions, Hoff has acquired significant knowledge of local government. He has personal and professional experience with the Public Works, Code Enforcement, Finance, Building and Zoning departments.
He met his wife, Jennie Arias Hoff, at the Police Department in 2004 and they were married in December 2015. She has been a police officer with Coral Gables since 2004, having previously worked for the Key Biscayne Police Department. In their spare time, the Hoffs enjoy boating, fishing, scuba diving and all the things South Florida has to offer.
Hoff responded to the following profile interview questions:
What motivated you to run for office?
Having recently retired after 30 years serving as a police officer I felt like this was a natural transition to continue my public service.
What do you think are the three most important issues facing the city today?
Traffic, safety and development.
Do you think the city does a good job of soliciting and listening to citizen input on projects?
We have a tendency to solicit a lot of data but I’m not sure that we really use it to the best of our ability. I will be a strong advocate for the citizens’ concerns.
Do you think that Streetscape was the right use of resources at the right time?
I would have advocated starting with the parking garages first and a more logical approach to the phases of construction. The merchants in our downtown area are suffering and I hope they are able to sustain the construction. I am confident that once it is all over the area will flourish. If elected, I will be do everything within my power to force the city to hold the contractors to the timelines and the contract already established.
Is the city managing development properly?
No. I am for responsible development. In order to keep our city vibrant and progressive, we need development. My intention is to make certain that any new developments won’t negatively impact the quality of life or traffic in our community.
Should High Pines and Little Gables be annexed?
Yes, if the residents want to be annexed and only after we are able to provide the infrastructure and municipal services without any adverse impact on our current residents.
Why are you the best person for the job?
I have over 30 years of government service. I have served on the Retirement Board and participated on steering committees throughout the city. I have an insider’s perspective of the city and will help provide my fellow commissioners with a different view of our city and its services. I will always keep the best interest of the residents in the forefront of all my decision making.
