As we move from celebrating the many contributions and accomplishments of people of color during Black History Month, into March – which is dedicated as Women’s History Month – it is fitting that we acknowledge the contributions that one professional woman of color is making every day for the people of her community who need compassionate, accessible, and professional family health care services.

We recently sat down with Dr. Sendy Jean-Louis, M.D., a first-generation doctor now serving as an Associate Medical Director for Conviva Care Centers. As a Haitian American, she has lived in Miami for over 30 years, where she presently supervises seven Conviva Care Centers and 19 providers. Let’s get to know Dr. Sendy Jean-Louis, as she shares some important guidance for our readers, young and old.

News: How long have you practiced medicine, and what do you specialize in?

Dr. Jean-Louis: I have been practicing medicine since 2006, and I specialize in Family Medicine.

News: Which communities do you serve here in South Florida?

Dr. Jean-Louis: I serve different communities in South Florida. I work primarily in centers located in Miami Gardens, Liberty City, and North Miami Beach.

News: Please share some of the most common health issues plaguing our seniors today, specifically in the African American community.

Dr. Jean-Louis: The most common health issues in African American communities today are heart disease, stroke due to hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Seniors face various health issues, and making sure they receive preventative care is extremely important.

News: What are some small daily changes we can make to lead healthier lifestyles and be an example for future generations?

Dr. Jean-Louis: Some daily changes we can make to lead a healthier lifestyle are to promote physical activity and a nutritious diet. Individuals should avoid foods high in fat and sodium; overly processed (junk food). Our diet should be rich in vegetables and fruits. Physical activity such as walking is also very important. A goal of 75 minutes weekly of high-intensity exercise or 150 minutes every week of moderate-intensity is ideal. Even small changes can have an impact on diabetes and hypertension.

News: How important is it to focus on preventative care in our youth?

Dr. Jean-Louis: Preventative care is a must for younger patients. Many conditions require less treatment if it is diagnosed earlier, and you are less likely to have complications. For example, mild diabetes can be treated with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. However, severe long-standing diabetes can lead to kidney failure, retinal disease, and vascular disease.
