Celebrities Come Out for UMSHoF Golf Tourney!

The 30th Annual University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Tournament to benefit the Hurricane Club attracted many professional and UM athletes and was a tremendous success.  Hosted by UMSHoF member and All-American pitcher Alex Santos, it was held at the luxurious Biltmore Golf Course on October 20th, as more than 100 golfers took to the course and enjoyed a beautiful South Florida Fall Day.

Participating in the 18-hole event were more than 2 dozen UMSHoF members including baseball members Alex Santos, J.D. Arteaga, Javy Rodriguez, Aubrey Huff, Jason Michaels, Doug Shields, Jon Jay and Coach Jim Morris.  Other UMSHoF members were Track Coach Mike Ward, Golf Coach Norm Parsons, Golf Coach Patti Rizzo, Ann Laughlin Fulginiti, Alonzo Highsmith, KC Jones, Brett Romberg, DJ Williams, Rich Mercier, Joaquin Gonzalez, Julie Cohen, Jodi Appelbaum Steinbauer, Janet Haas and tournament chairperson Tracy Kerdyk.  Members of the new Class of 2023 inductees attending were David Gil, Kevin Brown, Willie Smith, Aaron Moser and trainer Vinny Scavo.  Professional athletes included Major League Baseball players Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, Jose Contreras, Francisco Liriano, Hector Olivera, Gregory Polanco, and Hernandez Pedroso, along with former Miami Dolphin Wale Ogunleye.  More than a dozen other former Canes players teed it up including members of the 1985 National Championship team Steffen Majer, Chris Magno and Joe Nelson.
Gold sponsors for the event were Williamson Cadillac Buick GMC, Sandbar Sports Grill and Barket & Forns, P.A.  The event featured a silent auction, a Hole-In-One contest sponsored by Williamson and post tournament awards reception on the Fountain Terrace at Biltmore.  Special thanks to golf chairperson Tracy Kerdyk and the great group of volunteers who spent hours making the event a tremendous success and raising funds for student-athlete scholarships through the Hurricane Club.  The UM Sports Hall of Fame is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose purpose is to honor those athletes, coaches and administrators who have brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments and championships.  The Hall of Fame is currently led by President Mead McCabe and Executive Director John Routh.  For more information, go to UMSportsHallofFame.com or call the Hall at 305-284-2775.
