A clothing swap party orchestrated by Frances Yec, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s (CGWC) Environment Committee chair, served to recycle clothes as well as collect items for the Thrift Store at Lotus House.
The party, held at the CGWC’s historic clubhouse on Jan. 19, attracted more than 35 women. Everyone arrived that night with new and gently used items, from designer dresses to shoes and other accessories. Since the clothing industry, after fossil fuels, is most impactful on the environment, recycling clothes makes good sense.
Ladies attending enjoyed an evening socializing and snacking while sharing clothes. After a fun-filled evening, the mountain of items remaining were held until the following Monday.
At that point, the club’s Civic Engagement Committee chair Kristina Jackson with club sisters Meredeth McKissick, Ruth Martinez, Ann Ryan and Sonia M took over counting and evaluating the donations that were then delivered to the Lotus House Thrift Store. The number of gently used and new items donated tallied in at 276 with an estimated thrift value of $2,828.
The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit that owns and operates a free children’s dental clinic, maintains a historic clubhouse and serves the community through numerous projects and initiatives.
