This Chanukah, Coral Gables to Shine Brighter Than Ever with Jewish Pride and Confidence Menorah and Dreidel Parachutes to drop from 75 ft. Fire Truck Ladder
This Chanukah, Coral Gables is seeing a surge in public displays of the holiday and Jewish identity, with many more families and individuals planning to light their menorahs in visible places, such as their doors or windows.
“At this fraught time for the Jewish community, with war in Israel and American Jews facing a major rise in antisemitism, this year we are doing more to celebrate Chanukah with joy and Jewish pride,” said Rabbi Avraham Stolik, co-director of Chabad in Coral Gables. “The Menorah and Chanukah represent freedom of the human spirit, freedom from tyranny and oppression, and of the victory of good over evil.”
The entire community is invited to the annual City of Coral Gables Festival of Lights Chanukah Celebration scheduled for Sunday, December 29th, the fifth night of Chanukah, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ponce Circle Park, 2800 Ponce de Leon Blvd, Coral Gables.
The Chanukah celebration will feature a Firetruck Parade and a Menorah and Dreidel Parachute Drop from on top of Coral Gables’ Ladder Firetruck some 75 feet high. Our local Coral Gables firefighters will affix a large Menorah to their truck and along with a dreidel mascot will parade around the park. The firemen will then ascend the 75 ft. fire truck ladder and will shower down the menorah and dreidel parachutes along with chocolate gelt (coins) to the delight of all participants.
The free public event is for both children and adults and will offer live musical entertainment, rock climbing wall, ninja obstacle course, 360 photo booth, Chanukah crafts, face painting & balloon art, train rides & toddler play center, basketball toss, hot potato latkes, traditional Chanukah doughnuts and other holiday treats.
Participants who RSVP for this event will receive a free gift. RSVP at ChabadGables.com/menorah.
The highlight of the event will be the lighting of the candles on the large 12-foot Menorah that will illuminate Ponce Circle Park during the holiday season. Mayor Vince Lago, City Commissioners & community leaders will be the honored guests.
“Celebrating Chanukah is a potent point of light, Jewish pride and confidence for American Jews in the fight against darkness and antisemitism,” added Mrs. Chany Stolik, co-director of Chabad Coral Gables. “The celebration of Chanukah underscores the G-d endowed liberty that is at the heart of what America represents.”
This year’s celebrations carry added significance as they mark 50 years since the first public Menorah which was lit at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia in 1974. Today, the unprecedented public display of Chanukah has become a staple of Jewish cultural and religious life, forever altering the American practice and awareness of the festival.
Coral Gables’ menorah is one of more than 15,000 large public menorahs sponsored by Chabad in more than 100 countries around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate and the Kremlin, helping children and adults of all walks of life discover and enjoy the holiday message.
The event is co-sponsored by Dr. Barry Burak of Affiliated Healthcare Centers and the city of Coral Gables.
