Co-founder of nurse practitioner profession celebrates 103 years
Dr. Loretta Ford

Loretta Ford, PhD, a Coral Gables resident, was an honored guest of President Joe Biden during the 2023 Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.

Dr. Ford, who turned 103 years old on Dec. 28, 2023, has been recognized for her outstanding service as a World War II Army Air Corps Nurse and contributions as the co-founder of the nurse practitioner profession.

After serving in World War II, Dr. Ford graduated from the University of Colorado (CU) in 1949 with an MSN degree. She continued her studies as she practiced as a public health nurse, earning her PhD in nursing education from CU in 1961.

In the early 1960s, Dr. Ford discovered that, because of a shortage of primary care physicians in the community, healthcare for children and families was severely lacking. By 1965, she was a full professor at the CU College of Nursing, so she partnered with Dr. Henry Silver, a pediatrician at the CU Medical Center, to create and implement the first pediatric NP model and training program.

The program combined clinical care and research to teach nurses to factor in the social, psychological, environmental and economic situations of patients when developing care plans. Based on the success of that program, Dr. Ford was recruited to serve as the founding dean of the University of Rochester School of Nursing, where she worked for many years.

Dr. Ford is the author of more than 100 publications, holds seven honorary degrees from prestigious U.S. universities, and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Living Legend Award from the American Academy of Nursing.

In 1990, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary presented Dr. Ford with the Institute of Medicine’s prestigious Gustav O. Lienhard Award for outstanding achievement in improving healthcare in America.

She is widely regarded as one of the most influential nurses of the 20th Century.
