Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, the world’s foremost all-male comic ballet company, brings its internationally beloved troupe of dancers to the Arsht Center as part of its landmark 50th anniversary season, featuring gems from across the company’s groundbreaking repertoire.

Founded in New York in 1974, the company, affectionately known as the Trocks, has grown from its roots in late-late shows in off-off-Broadway lofts to a global touring sensation, performing from Tokyo to Toronto. The company dances en travesti with razor-sharp wit and breathtaking pointe work, performing polished parodies of works that span the classical ballet canon. Revered by ballet aficionados as well as by those who don’t know a plié from a jeté, the Trocks are “a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals” (Sydney Star Observer).

The Smoogies are Vaughn “V.KEYS” Henry (keys, vocals), Dion Kerr (bass), Harvel Nakundi (drums, percussion) and David Chiverton (drums), all of whom are formally trained musicians from South Florida. Each member has served interchangeably as leader and accompanist to performing acts worldwide, operating in groups such as Lauryn Hill, Snarky Puppy, Ghost Note, Marcus Strickland, Etienne Charles and Godwin Louis, to name a few.

The band recently won the “Jazz Road” touring grant from South Arts, kicking off their debut tour for their forthcoming second record, People Music. The Smoogies refine their sound as a quartet, deepening their connection and cohesion with this album. They also hope to continue the band’s philosophy: to make music for the people and for them to feel good while listening.

Beginning their career with a feature on the digital music series “The Chivertone Sessions,” The Smoogies quickly developed a buzz, catching the ear of trumpeter Nicholas Payton. This led to their collaboration on the self-released debut Planet Smoogies.

BRUCH  Violin Concerto

BRAHMS  Symphony No. 1

“I shall never write a symphony,” Brahms said when young. He was fearful of the inevitable comparisons to Beethoven, and it took the otherwise prolific composer 14 years to produce his first symphony. When it was unveiled, audiences joyfully dubbed it “Beethoven’s Tenth,” in part because the great melody of the finale resembles the Ode to Joy (“any ass can see that,” Brahms said). But Brahms has emerged from under Beethoven’s shadow, and his first symphony, with its rich melodies and colorful orchestrations, is recognized as a magnificent work. Renowned violinist Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider joins the orchestra for Bruch’s popular violin concerto.

Tony & the Kings bring new Miami Latin styles that reflect the band’s Puerto Rican, Cuban and African roots while remaining grounded in the group’s funk and soul foundations. Boogaloo, Latin soul, son, Afro-funk … These are just some of the styles you will hear on their records and at their live shows.

The release of “Piropo / Son Del Barrio” marked the band’s debut single on Miami’s Tiki Tumbao Records. “Piropo” is a playful, Latin soul, boogaloo song that features Rivera calling out his love for his girl. This is sure to be a dance floor favorite at your local funk and soul party. The B side, “Son Del Barrio,” is a Latin psych-funk keeper with a steady beat and B-boy ready breaks. This song is a good reminder why you always need to check the B sides.

Accompanying the release of the “Piropo / Son Del Barrio” 7-inch record is a music video that takes you on a walk through Little Havana with DJ Angelica Rose. Follow her as she heads to Magic City Soul Club in downtown Miami to spin 45s with Tony & the Kings.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world’s most beloved dance companies, is celebrating its 65thanniversary season. The engagement will showcase the passionate spirit and extraordinary technique of the Company’s dancers.

The season’s repertory includes exciting new works commissioned especially for Ailey: Amy Hall Garner’s rousing, high-spirited tribute to her grandfather, CENTURY; Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish’s dreamlike reminiscence of romance, Me, Myself and You; new productions of Ronald K. Brown’s Dancing SpiritMiami’s own Jamar Roberts’ Ode and Solo by Hans van Manen; and, as always, Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations. Since its debut in 1960, Revelations has been moving audiences with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, evoking timeless themes of determination, hope and transcendence. An intimate reflection of Ailey’s childhood memories of growing up in the South and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African American community and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition.

In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” that celebrates the African American cultural experience and preserves and enriches America’s modern dance heritage. Although he created 79 ballets over his lifetime, Ailey maintained that his company was not exclusively a repository for his own work.

Program:
ABELS Emerge
ELGAR Cello Concerto
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade

Don’t miss this “new generation’s cello superstar” (Agence France-Presse) when Alisa Weilerstein plays Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. One of the best-loved pieces in the cello repertory, Elgar’s emotional masterpiece has been a favorite of performers and audiences since its premiere just over 100 years ago, and is now a pop culture hit featured on the soundtrack of Cate Blanchett’s award-winning film Tár. Hailed for her consummate artistry, emotional investment and rare interpretive depth, “Weilerstein is truly a phenomenon,” the U.K’s Telegraph says.

The program, conducted by Detroit’s music director, Jader Bignamini, opens with Emerge by Michael Abels, a Pulitzer Prize winner best known for the opera Omar and his genre-defying movie scores for Jordan Peele’s Get OutUs and Nope. Abels notes that his new 10-minute Emerge “begins with the sound of an orchestra tuning up during a sunrise; a metaphor for how we feel being able to play music together again after so many months of that being restricted.”

Concluding the concert is Rimsky-Korsakov’s sensuous and alluring Scheherazade. Inspired by the fantastic folktales of The Arabian Nights that feature “Aladdin and His Magic Lamp,” “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” and “Sinbad the Sailor,” the brilliantly orchestrated Scheherazade is the very definition of an unforgettable crowd-pleaser and the perfect showcase for the outstanding virtuosity of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra players.

MOZART Piano Concerto No. 9 “Jeunehomme”
PROKOFIEV Excerpts from Romeo & Juliet

The Grammy-winning Daniil Trifonov is one of the most exciting and revelatory pianists of our time. “Daniil has everything and more … tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” legendary pianist Martha Argerich marveled. Trifonov makes his Knight Masterworks Classical Music series debut playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9, “Jeunehomme.” Written when the composer was 21 years old, the work is arguably the first masterpiece of the classical era, hailed by lauded Mozart pianist Alfred Brendel as “one of the greatest wonders of the world.”

Known for its intensely energetic performances, The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra has claimed its position among Europe’s most exciting orchestras under the leadership of young and dynamic, Israeli-born chief conductor Lahav Shani. The orchestra’s Arsht Center debut concert begins with the mysterious, luminous soundscapes of Arvo Pärt’s Swansong, whose harmonies suggest its origins as a piece of choral and organ music. Inspired by a line from a Christian funeral prayer, “safe lodging, holy rest and peace at the last.” That devotion has found a hymnlike expression in Pärt’s music.

The program concludes with selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Julietwhose sweeping music depicting Shakespeare’s famous love scenes, street fights, dances and deaths is rapturous, energetic, tragic and grand.

Lyrics by Fred Ebb

Directed by Stuart Meltzer

As the 1920s draw to a close in Berlin, a garish master of ceremonies assures his audience that they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. The Mavericks, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, have gone through three distinct phases since their founding in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ’90s. A long hiatus starting in 2003, when the musicians each went their own way. And finally, a triumphant reunion in 2012 that held long enough for the band to recently celebrate their 30th anniversary.

The Mavericks ushered in the fourth phase of their evolution with the No. 1 Billboard debut of their first-ever all-Spanish album, En Español, released in 2020 on the band’s own Mono Mundo label. Although all 12 tracks are in Spanish, the collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi and reimagined Afro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are gems drawn from the vast Latin American songbook, while five are originals written or co-written by Raul Malo.

Like the band’s entire body of music, this album cannot be boxed in a single category. The songs are as diverse as Latin America itself, and as cohesive as the ideal of the American melting pot. To season this rich musical paella, The Mavericks add their signature country, rock and Tex-Mex flavors and a refreshing spontaneity to the mix. En Español flips the band’s usual fusion formula, which adds a striking assortment of genres — salsa, ska, norteño, mariachi and much more — to its sturdy rock-country base. Now, the foundation is solidly Latin, with streaks of irreverent rock and twangy guitars running through it, all branded with the unmistakable Mavericks style.

Academy of St Martin in the Fields
Joshua Bell, music director and violin

Program:
MOZART Le nozze de Figaro Overture
MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto E minor
SCHUMANN Symphony No. 2

Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, artists much loved by Arsht Center audiences, make their eagerly awaited return to the Knight Concert Hall with a program of favorite works by favorite composers. Audiences around the globe have cheered the phenomenal violinist Bell as soloist and conductor, and in the Knight Concert Hall, Bell will play both roles in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. With its irresistible melodic verve and rhythmic drive, this essential masterpiece of Romantic music is a dazzling showcase for Bell’s trademark emotional depth and unstoppable virtuosity.

Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 opens with a heroic introduction, followed by a thrilling scherzo, a  gorgeous adagio and a gloriously triumphant finale. In other words, it is the quintessential Romantic symphony, and one of the composer’s grandest orchestral creations.

First but not least, Bell and the Academy launch their program with Mozart’s sparkling The Marriage of Figaro Overturea breathless, four-minute delight that previews the scintillating and sardonic humor of Mozart’s operatic masterpiece.

Since its founding in 1958, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields has been one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music. When the virtuoso Bell was named the ensemble’s music director in 2011, it was a marriage ordained by the gods of music. The winning combination has produced a dazzling ensemble that retains the collegial spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less chamber orchestra with playing that is marked by “propulsive energy” (South Florida Classical Review), “glowing interpretations” (The Washington Post, and a “precision that is staggering from the first downbeat” (Palm Beach Daily News).
