The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women (CFW) celebrated the achievements of three graduating seniors from the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy who have excelled academically and demonstrated significant contributions to their community by presenting each of them with a $1,000 check in support of their higher education endeavors.
The scholarship presentation took place on June 10 in the Stephen P. Clark Center Commission Chambers during the Housing, Recreation, Culture, and Community Development Committee meeting presided by chair Marleine Bastien. Vice chair Eileen Higgins, Sen. Rene Garcia, Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez, and Commissioner Kionee McGhee also participated in the recognition event.
CFW chair Michelle Abreu, joined by fellow board members and CFW director Nina Roque-Strickroot, presented the scholarship checks and spoke about the importance of recognizing the vital role that young women play in shaping the future of our communities.
The Young Women’s Preparatory Academy is a distinguished and highly respected magnet public school for girls, grades 6-12. While the school is in Little Havana, it boasts a highly diverse student population with students who reside all over Miami-Dade County.
The Young Women’s Preparatory Academy is a top 100 high school in the U.S. and has been consistently recognized by the U.S. News and World Report magazine and by Magnet Schools of America as among the top high schools in the country.
This year’s scholarship recipients are:
Bathsheba Auguste – District 1, Barry University
Ebonie Knight – District 2, Howard University
Eva Rivera – District 7, Boston University
The following members of the Commission for Women also were in attendance: Milagros Del Valle, Mercedes Carlson, Jacqueline Pena, and Clora Adkins, along with Silvia Tarafa, principal of the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy, and Rose Milian, lead teacher at the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy.
