This summer at a 7:30 p.m. new, earlier time every other Thursday — June 8 through Aug. 17 — the Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series returns for its 38thyear.

In the historic, Spanish-revival style setting of Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ, concertgoers have the unique opportunity to not only hear music by incredible classical and jazz musicians. Attendees also learn more about the music and each artist’s journey with music.

Since 1985, the Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series has been attended by more than 70,000 concertgoers. It is a time-honored tradition that continued with virtual broadcasts to the world throughout the pandemic summers of 2020 and 2021, and gathered an average of 7,500 views each summer. This developed an extended audience that CAP is excited to welcome on-ground again in the summer of 2023.

Throughout the school year, the Community Arts Program (CAP) also provides after-school music education with the CAP Conservatory for the Arts and its Miami Jazz Institute. These reach children and youth from over 53 Miami-Dade County chools, no matter what students’ circumstance or ability.

“The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ,” said Shelly Berg, dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

“The CAP Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit,” Berg added.

“We are very excited to welcome concertgoers on-ground again, and with the usual lineup of incredible artists this summer,” saod Mark Hart, executive and artistic director of the Community Arts Program. “It’s an honor also to welcome concertgoers locally, from across the states, and the globe, and a reward as well to see the growth of our after-school music education program for all children and youth.
June programs include:
June 8 – Cap All-Star Jazz Ensemble Reunion Big Band
The Community Arts Program (CAP) 2023 Summer Concert Series opens when alumni of the CAP Miami Jazz Institute All-Star Jazz Ensemble return for a full-on reunion big band, directed by Daniel Strange. A top-tappin’ evening transports listeners to the Big Band era with music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and other giants.
June 22 – Mark Kosower

Principal cello of the Cleveland Orchestra, Mark Kosower embodies the complete musician, exemplified through his numerous awards and accolades. Joined by pianist Melivia Raharjo it’s an incredible evening with music of Beethoven, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Krenek, Myaskovsky, and Martin.
