The Coral Gables Knights of Columbus Council #3274 has invited civic and social groups throughout the community to compete in the First Annual Chili Cook-Off, a new charitable event to take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 270 Catalonia Ave. in Coral Gables.
Firefighters, police and other community service groups are lining up to demonstrate who makes the best chili and to win prize donations for their organizations. A distinguished panel consisting of local chefs will judge the competition. Groups who want to get in this hot competition can request an entry form and a copy of the rules by email at kofcchilli@gmail.com.
Entry forms must be submitted by Sept. 4. There is no fee for competing groups to enter. Each group will be provided with a six-foot table and one gas stove. The competitors must bring their own pots, pans and food. All cooking must be done on site. Groups may begin setting up at noon. Cooking time starts at 2 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. The Chili Cook-Off is a fun event open to the public from 2 to 9 p.m.
There are two admission prices: VIP admission is $15 per person with entrance at 2 p.m. and general admission at $10 per person with entrance at 4 p.m. Children under 12 are admitted free. With any admission, starting at 6 p.m. to closing, visitors are allowed to freely taste the chili dishes from all the competing teams. Also, for sale, there will be burgers, chicken tenders, fries, sodas and beer. Live entertainment will feature a country band playing periodically during the event.
