Construction underway on new $5.4M aquatic complex at South Dade Park

Construction is underway on a new aquatic complex at South Dade Park, 28151 SW 164 Ave. The approximate $5.4 million project includes a new multi-purpose competitive/recreational swimming pool with zero-depth entry, eight 25-yard lap lanes and a water slide tower, plus re-modeled pool buildings.

The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department broke ground on this new park development on Nov. 16.

“I am pleased that South Dade Park will soon have a new aquatic complex,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “Public park spaces like these are focused on enhancing Miami-Dade livability and helping residents to live happier and healthier lives.”

“South Dade Park is a very active recreation hub in District 8,” said Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava. “I am very excited about adding a state-of-the-art aquatic facility at this park.

“It will allow families to experience all the great benefits of swimming in a safe and enjoyable place that offers improved functionality for Learn-to-Swim lessons, water exercise classes, splash and play fun, and other pool-related activities,” she added.

“Miami-Dade Parks is making great strides in revitalizing our parks and open spaces with fun and thrilling outdoor recreation options for people of all ages,” said Jack Kardys, Miami-Dade Parks director, explaining that the new development is a result of the implementation of the Miami-Dade Parks Open Space Master Plan’s mission to connect people and parks for life.

The Plan aims to provide facilities, programs and services that create “great” parks, public spaces, natural and cultural places, streets, greenways, trails and water trails to help create greater connectivity amongst residents, improve their health and sense of wellness and to conserve the environment that sustains us all.

Miami-Dade Parks Design and Build Team is working to complete the project in conjunction with architectural and engineering consultants Forbes Architects, Witkin Hults Design Group, EAC Consulting, Inc., TLC Engineers, Counsilman-Hunsaker, and construction contractor Lunacon Construction Group, Corp. Construction starts this month and is scheduled to be completed in Winter/Spring 2017.

The project is being funded by the “Building Better Communities” General Obligation Bond (BBC-GOB) Program, Impact Fees and the Quality Neighborhood Improvement Program.

The 8.61-acre park contains tennis and basketball courts, playground, Fitness Zone, skate park, and walkway. Miami-Dade Parks Fit2Play after-school and out-of-school/seasonal camps for kids and the Active Older Adults program also are offered at this site. Facility rentals are also available.
