Starting the year with enthusiasm, the Coral Gables Garden Club joined hands with other District XII clubs DERM, ecologist James Duncan, and the Dranoff Foundation2, planting 300 trees at the West Matheson hydric Hammock restoration site “Our hope is to bring support to the endangered species that once thrived in this area, by planting native trees and understory plants” says president Susan Rodriguez. Plantings included the Florida Keys Black bead, Torchwood and Jamaican Capers all host plants for endangered butterflies.

In February, our Garden Therapy chair once again, held a workshop for the children at Crystal Academy, which all enjoyed including members of the Coral Gables Garden Club and the staff. “It’s a wonderful experience to see the joys that flowers bring to the students” says Carmen Cason the organizer of the event.

The Coral Gables Garden Club is a not-for-profit organization whose sole purpose is to educate youth and the broader public in various aspects of gardening, horticulture, environmental issues, civic beautification, and floral design. It was organized in 1925 by ladies who wanted to share plant knowledge and were committed to civic beautification. George Merrick’s mother and wife, Eunice, were founding members, and Eunice was the Club’s 2nd President. The club continues this tradition and has many initiatives planned this coming year.
