Coral Gables Merrick House Offers Centennial Event Featuring Re-Enactment of George Merrick’s Grandpa Fink

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

George Merrick’s Grandpa Fink will make an appearance at Coral Gables Congregational Church on Sunday, May 4, at 2:00 pm. This free event is in conjunction with the Coral Gables Centennial. Henry George Greatrake Fink, a traveling preacher and purveyor of Fink’s Magic Oil, passed on to his grandson the “can-do, never-say-die” characteristic that George’s father called “Finkism.” Grandpa Fink was a big fan of his first-born grandson, calling his early writings and poems “better than Wordsworth.”

Re-enactor Robert Dawson will help us understand what made George Merrick tick while regaling us with stories—accompanied by photographs—that will be interesting, amusing and heart-warming. Tales will be told starting at 2:00 pm in the historic sanctuary of Coral Gables Congregational Church–the church that George Merrick built in honor of his father Solomon, a Congregational minister.

Mr. Dawson, who has researched and created over 70 one-man presentations, brings historical figures to life–entertaining and educating along the way. Attendees may reserve their complimentary “ticket” at www.gablesfoundation.org/events/.

This event is brought to you by members of the Merrick House Governing Board: Mary Beth Burke,Carmen Cason, Alexis Ehrenhaft, Margaret Groves, Joanne Meagher, Genevieve Orr and Bonnie Seipp.
