Coral Gables Museum exhibit pairs photography and poetry

The Coral Gables Museum presents “Boundaries,” an original exhibit pairing the poems of inaugural poet Richard Blanco with the photography of artist Jacob Hessler, that will explore the many ways in which we experience boundaries in our everyday life and in society. The exhibition will be on view from Nov. 2 through Jan. 28.

Blanco will provide a live reading at a private event on Nov. 1 and a book signing during the public opening on Nov. 3. Hessler will lead an exhibit tour on Nov. 4.

This exhibition combines poems by inaugural poet Blanco with the artwork of photographer Hessler in order to explore the physical, imagined, and psychological boundary lines — both historic and current — that have plagued our American Society. The exhibit is an extension of the new book Boundaries, which features a foreword by Jorge Ramos, poetry by Blanco, and photography by Hessler, and is printed by Two Ponds Press.

Although the world continues to move its way towards being boundary-less with advances in technology (air travel/social media/etc.), the nation continues to feel more and more polarized, repeating past mistakes and drawing lines in the sand with an us versus them mentality. Across the North American continent, lie both visible and invisible boundaries.

Exhibit sponsor is Two Ponds Press. Museum Season Partners are Withers Transportation, Abraham Foundation, Batchelor Foundation, City of Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and State of Florida Cultural Affairs.

Blanco will participate in a book signing on Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables Gallery Night Live!, Nov. 3, 6-10 p.m. The Coral Gables Museum presents the free public opening of new exhibits “Boundaries” and “Sheltering Survivors.” and an opportunity to meet the creative team, poet Richard Blanco and photographer Jacob Hessler. Enjoy the opportunity to have your favorite Blanco book signed by the author. The Museum Gift Shop will have Blanco’s books available for sale. Live music and a cash bar will be available.

Meet the artist during an exhibit tour with Jacob Hessler on Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. Hessler will give a tour of the exhibition and discuss themes of Boundaries. The event is free for museum members; $10 for the general public.
