In the April 8 municipal election, Coral Gables voters have the opportunity to re-elect a dedicated, effective, and deeply experienced public servant. Vice Mayor Rhonda Anderson, who currently holds the Group II seat on the Coral Gables City Commission, has earned our enthusiastic endorsement for another term.
Anderson’s leadership has been defined by her commitment to the residents, her focus on transparency, and her thoughtful approach to complex city issues. A longtime Coral Gables resident with a legal career spanning nearly four decades, she brings both professional expertise and a community-first mindset to every decision she makes.
First elected to the Commission in 2021 and appointed Vice Mayor in 2023, Anderson has built a record of results. She’s helped Coral Gables make measurable progress on issues that matter most: public safety, sustainable infrastructure, development transparency, and quality of life enhancements for all residents.
One of her most significant contributions has been on public safety. She supported adding 15 new police officers and 15 firefighters, helped fund a new fire station to better serve South Gables, and backed competitive wages to ensure Coral Gables retains its talented public safety professionals.
Her work on development oversight and transparency is equally impactful. Anderson pushed for expanded public notice requirements for large projects and zoning changes, launched a “Development Projects” portal on the city’s website, and ensured residents have the right to submit input early in the planning process. These reforms have made the city’s review process more open, more inclusive, and more accountable.
Anderson has also led efforts to curb overdevelopment, advocating for increased setbacks, reduced building densities, and the preservation of green space. She supported new rules limiting the size of townhomes and championed stronger architectural requirements for projects seeking Mediterranean bonuses. Thanks to her leadership, Coral Gables is seeing a return to thoughtful design and a greener, more pedestrian-friendly cityscape.
Infrastructure has been another cornerstone of her agenda. From initiating the septic-to-sewer conversion plan, to launching sidewalk replacements and resurfacing city streets, to pushing for improved traffic calming and ADA accessibility, Anderson’s practical and proactive approach stands out. She’s also championed environmental policies, including ordinances to reduce light pollution, promote carbon-sequestered cement in construction, and expand the city’s tree canopy.
Beyond policy, Anderson’s deep roots in the community are evident. A resident since 1987, she and her husband raised their family in Coral Gables. Her volunteerism is extensive—serving on the Public Safety Board, the Planning and Zoning Board, and the Garden Club, among others. Professionally, she has run her own law practice since 1987, representing clients at the state, federal, and appellate levels. She earned her Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern School of Law as well as a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Miami.
Rhonda Anderson is a smart, steady, and responsive leader who listens to her constituents and follows through. She has made Coral Gables safer, greener, and more transparent—without losing sight of the city’s charm or its future.
We proudly endorse Rhonda Anderson for re-election to the Coral Gables City Commission, Group II.
