Receiving Legacy Awards are (l-r) Gala honorees Gloria Burns and Dorothy Thomson with CGWC president Ruth Martinez.

Founded in 1923, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club culminated its yearlong Centennial celebration with a Roaring 20’s Gala on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the club’s historic clubhouses in Coral Gables.

Gables Mayor Vince Lago and his wife, Olga, along with the first woman mayor of Coral Gables, Dorothy Thomson; Commissioner Melissa Castro; Marlin Ebert, president of the Villagers, and John Edward Smith from the Dr. John T. McDonald Foundation, were in attendance among the nearly 200 guests.

Vice Mayor Rhonda Anderson presented a proclamation to club president Ruth Martinez, which declared December 2023 as “Coral Gables Woman’s Club Month.”

Dorothy Thomson and Gloria Burns, two long-standing members, were both recognized by president Ruth Martinez with Legacy Awards for their impact and dedication to the club. According to, “Women like Dorothy and Gloria have been the backbone of countless American communities through their unwavering determination and resilience, shaping them into thriving hubs of strength and compassion,” Martinez said.

The original location of the Coral Gables Library before the city built its own in 1957, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club is a 501(c)3 organization supporting a free children’s dental clinic on premise. The mission of the club is to provide the opportunity to volunteer services in various charitable projects within the community and the world. Nearly 100 active members participate in numerous club activities, as a part of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs.

The club’s fundraising efforts are to support the Coral Gables Children’s Dental Clinic and to assist in maintaining the historic building. Since 1939, the clinic has provided free dental services to more 40,000 children of low-income families in Miami Dade County — over $5.5 million through fundraising projects and the assistance of grants from foundations and businesses.
