Nine members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) participated in Smart Ride 20, its final year, the weekend of Nov. 17.
CGWC has served as Pit Crew No. 1 for Smart Ride for the past 18 years and has donated funds to underwrite luggage tags each year. This 165-mile bike ride from Miami to Key West has raised millions for HIV/Aids and related services for those affected, with 100 percent of the money donated directed to those related charities. Incredibly, no administrative costs have ever been paid to pull off this amazing event founded by CGWC’s friend Glen Weinzimer so many years ago. Smart Ride 20 raised $1,280,321 and donations still are coming in through the end of December.
This CGWC legacy project was brought to the club’s attention by its past president Barbara Lapsley whose brother died from AIDS in 1993. For CGWC, this has been a prime example of a commitment to “living the volunteer spirit.”
Those manning the pit stop this year with Barbara were Carmen Suarez, Mayra Dominguez, Denise Valluerca, Barbara Lapsley, Ruth Martinez, Linda Hartwell, Donna Myrill, Carol Horkowitz, and Dr. Iris Torres Rivera.
