Faced with the growing challenges facing Cuba’s architectural heritage due to urban deterioration, architect and urban planner Julio César Pérez-Hernández presents Courtyards of Cuba: The Tradition of Courtyards in Cuban Architecture, a book published by Andelani Press, which constitutes the first comprehensive study on the evolution, compositional value and uniqueness of courtyards as essential elements of Cuba’s architectural and cultural identity.
The launch event will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Books & Books bookstore in Coral Gables. During the evening, the author will offer a special presentation of the work, followed by an exclusive conversation with architect Ricardo Álvarez-Díaz, FAIA, co-founder of the publishing house, in which key issues — such as heritage preservation, the research process behind the book, and the relevance of courtyards as spaces of identity and collective memory — will be addressed.
“The design of the courtyards is an exploration of space, soul, and traditions in search of identity,” said Pérez-Hernández, who has dedicated his professional career to documenting and defending Cuba’s architectural legacy.
For his part, architect Álvarez-Díaz said, “This book is not only a tribute to Cuban architecture, but also a vital tool to educate, inspire, and preserve. We are honored to accompany Julio César in this effort to rescue what defines us as culture.”
Courtyards of Cuba is a book aimed at architects, urban planners, historians, students, and lovers of history, Cuban culture, and architecture. The work features an exceptional visual archive that documents the courtyards from Havana to Santiago, revealing their evolution from colonial times to the present day.
Event details: Presentation of the book Courtyards of Cuba will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 6 p.m., at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
