The Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami (CCBM), presents the premier of “Spanish Classical Night”, in collaboration with the Sanctuary of the Arts Choreographic Ensemble and Ballet Nacional Dominicano, on Friday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. at the Miami Dade County Auditorium starring Cuban principal dancers with CCBM soloists and corp de ballet.
Following the Spaniard roots of CCBM, “Spanish Classical Night” will include some of the best pieces of classical repertoire where both the subject and styles are clearly Spanish, emphasizing the relationship between classical ballet and traditional Spanish dance that has been an important influence in the repertoire of both the nineteenth and twentieth century ballets.
The program will feature “Paquita” staged for the first time in Russia for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg by Marius Petipa and Pierre-Frédéric Malavergne and the first work ever staged by Petipa in Russia. In 1881, Petipa produced a revival of the ballet for which he added new pieces specially composed by Ludwig Minkus. “Esmeralda” pas de six, a ballet inspired by the novel Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo, originally choreographed by Jules Perrot to music by Cesare Pugni, presented in London in 1844. “Don Quixote” pas de deux based on episodes taken from the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. The ballet was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to the music of Ludwig Minkus and first presented by Moscow‘s Bolshoi Ballet in 1869.
Principal Dancers of Ballet Nacional Dominicano, artistic director Stephanie Bauger, will perform Alberto Alonso’s “Carmen,” the definitive version, coached by the late Cuban choreographer’s wife Sonia Calero who will receive the first “Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami Artistic Achievement Award”, at the performance, created to honor prominent dance figures in our community.
Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami’s mission is to promote and preserve the tradition of the world renowned school of Cuban classical ballet; founded in 2006 as a non-profit 501(C)3 organization. For additional information, please visit www.cubanclassicalballet.org
