Immaculata-La Salle High School recently played host to its much-anticipated 6th annual Domino Night Tournament, a lively event that not only reignited the spirit of camaraderie among alumni and parents but also served as a heartfelt tribute to a beloved member of the school community.

With over 30 teams vying for the top honors, the atmosphere was electric as participants engaged in friendly competition, showcasing their skills, and reveling in the joy of the game. But beyond the thrill of victory, this year’s tournament held a special significance as it was dedicated to the memory of John Mendez, a distinguished member of the Class of 1969 who sadly passed away on February 20, 2024.

John’s legacy loomed large over Domino Night, as he was instrumental in its inception, alongside Coach Grosso, Cristina Brito, Jose Valdes (c/o 1969), Ruben Torres (c/o 1968), and William “Bill” Khoury (c/o 1969). Together, they envisioned an event that would not only serve as a platform for alumni to reconnect but also celebrate the vibrant Latin culture that is deeply woven into the fabric of Immaculata-La Salle.

The success of Domino Night would not have been possible without the generous support of its sponsors, including Sunshine Gasoline Distributors, The Collection, US Century Bank, Archdiocese of Miami, Mathon Investment, Risse Brothers School Uniforms, AK Building Services, The Russomano Family, and Elysium Effect Enterprise, LLC. Their contributions not only helped make the event a resounding success but also underscored the spirit of community and generosity that defines the Immaculata-La Salle family.

All proceeds from the tournament were dedicated to a noble cause – the Pedro Pan Scholarship fund. This initiative, championed by Cristina Brito, aims to provide deserving students with access to quality education, ensuring that John’s legacy of kindness and compassion lives on through the opportunities it affords to future generations.

For those interested in learning more about the Pedro Pan Scholarship fund or contributing to this worthy cause, please reach out to Cristina Brito at cbrito@ilsroyals.com. Your support will not only honor John’s memory but also make a meaningful difference in the lives of deserving young scholars.

As the echoes of laughter and the clatter of dominoes fade away, the legacy of John Mendez and the spirit of Domino Night continue to resonate within the halls of Immaculata-La Salle, serving as a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship, community, and philanthropy that define our cherished institution.
