Miami Jewish Health recently announced a $5 million gift from real estate super broker, investor and philanthropist Edie Laquer.

Jay Solowsky, chair of the board, announced the donation at the organization’s “Turn the Town Teal” event at Tuyo Restaurant in honor of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s “Light Up the World” effort for Alzheimer’s Awareness month.

“Edie’s gift was guided by her philosophy that philanthropy joins and elevates us to a higher level of humanity,” Solowsky said.

Laquer’s donation will assist in building the future EmpathiCare Village — a state-of-the-art residential complex for the care of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory-related disorders.

The EmpathiCare Village at Miami Jewish Health will be the first memory support residence of its kind in the world, creating an environment in which residents and their families can continue to experience many of the joys of daily living.

Jeffrey Freimark, president and CEO, unveiled the new architectural model of the future memory care village at Miami Jewish Health during the Nov. 3 event.

“The planning, construction and implementation of this revolutionary village is the most ambitious initiative we have ever undertaken in our 76-year history,” Freimark said.

The Freedom Tower, Miami Tower, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the American Airlines Arena simultaneously lit their buildings teal in a show of support for Miami Jewish Health’s mission the night of the event.

Miami Jewish Health is one of the most innovative healthcare providers in the United States treating more than 12,000 people of all ages, ethnicities and religions annually. The 76-year-old institution draws patients from across the nation and around the world for its pioneering Centers of Excellence that include: Rosomoff Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center; Brucker Biofeedback; Memory Center; Rehabilitation Services at Miami Jewish Health Systems’ Nursing Facility and the Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).
