“Brunch in Full Bloom: Celebrating the Women Who Do It All” was a magical event on Aug. 8 at American Legion Post 98 in Coral Gables. Coordinated by Freedom Feasts, a student-led initiative, the affair honored women whose leadership, volunteerism and service have made a positive impact on our community.
The talented young people from St. Brendan High School cooked, prepared and served an impressive brunch buffet. Guests, dressed in spring-inspired attire, also enjoyed a Build-Your-Own Bouquet Bar. Throughout the afternoon, violinist Mayum Brito entertained the crowd with beautiful classical music.
American Legion Post 98 Commander JC Gomez welcomed guests and praised the many volunteers who have supported the post throughout the year.
One of the highlights of the event was a moving presentation by Julie Robison, founder and CEO of the South Dade Women Veterans Alliance (SDWVA). Julie captivated guests as she shared her journey from a difficult home life to military service in a field artillery unit, as well as her experience as a survivor of sexual assault trauma.
While working at the VA Hospital, Julie heard many powerful stories from other women veterans. She now is developing the Legacy Project Initiative to ensure those stories are heard, preserved and never forgotten. The project will be a series of books featuring the experiences of women veterans. Julie encourages women veterans interested in sharing their stories to contact her.
Guests included members of Julie’s SDWVA organization, as well as representatives from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, whose members have worked with Post 98 on several events.
In other good works taking place throughout our community, Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless hosted their annual back-to-school breakfast for teachers at the Marvin B. Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE), which was once located in Coral Gables. Although the school has moved north, Lynn, Hal and their many friends continue supporting the dedicated teachers who work tirelessly with students facing poverty and numerous other challenges.
Each year, Lynn asks the teachers to complete wish lists and then presents them with gifts at the breakfast. This year, she even managed to find the shoe size of every teacher and surprised each one with a new pair of shoes. Lynn was especially grateful to Macy’s Dadeland for providing wonderful prices.
Ruth Martinez of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club joined other supporters in presenting ACE principal Dr. Geneva Green with donations. Contributors included Dr. Chaviano, Vanessa Brito, Carlos Rossi, Jerry Kavulich, John and Susan Medina, Hank Langston, Orestes and Carmen, and Ada and John Holian.
Speaking of community events, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club had a busy week at Birdie Bistro with two back-to-back charity events: Gringo Bingo on Aug. 11 and Mahjong the following evening.
