Find Your Passion For Clay At The Ceramic League Of Miami

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Ceramic League of Miami (CLM) is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing appreciation for the ceramic arts and educating members and the general public in all aspects of ceramics.

As we approach our 75th anniversary, we continue to promote ceramics through our community school, membership program, visiting artist workshops, our Sunday booth at the Pinecrest Farmer’s Market, monthly podcast at Community Newpapers, Maker’s Markets and so much more.

CLM at Pinecrest Farmer’s Market

This October is especially busy at CLM.  We are currently completing Session 1 of classes and Session 2 starts on October 28.  Classes are available in a variety of pottery methods for beginners and advanced students. Registration for our classes is available on our website.

CLM is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a Maker’s Market Fiesta on October 19 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at our studios located at 8873 SW 129 Street.  The event is a nod to Hispanic culture which has impacted the art of pottery in profound ways. From pre-Columbian times to the present, Hispanics continue to impact pottery and crafts nationally as well as here in Miami.  Our makers will include wood turners, jewelry makers, the You Make Unit from the Miami-Dade County Public Library System, as well as potters.  The day will include craft demonstrations, studio tours and the opportunity to purchase unique, handcrafted items from our makers and our gallery.

During the month of October, we are completing a hands-on workshop to create water filtration vessels in support of Good Foundations International, formally known as Potters for Peace.  This organization helps bring potable water and hygiene programs to underserved communities worldwide, including Central and South America, with the emphasis on women’s physical and economic health.  The work created at the workshop is currently on display at the Wirtz Gallery at the United Community Bank in South Miami.  At the end of the exhibition, the pieces will be auctioned at an event, hosted by Books and Books in Coral Gables, with Rachel Silverstein from Miami Waterkeepers.  Proceeds will be donated to Good Foundations International.

Also in October, we are welcoming Lisa Orr, an American potter and teacher of ceramics, for a hands-on workshop. Lisa’s work is included in public and private collections, nationally and internationally.  Lisa, along with the participants, will be building one of her Rocket kiln designs, that use wood for fuel,  utilizing a disused electric kiln body along with bricks and some metal tubing. The workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27 at CLM starting at 10:00 AM. Lisa is also presenting a free, slide presentation at CLM on October 26 at 7:00 PM.

During the month of November, CLM will be engaged in a major fundraising effort to benefit the makers impacted by Hurricane Helene. The month-long campaign will culminate with a Maker’s Market on November 30 at CLM.
