Freebee Tesla Model X Rideshare Service Launches in Coral Gables with Expanded Hours of Operation

The City of Coral Gables has partnered with Freebee to provide free, on-demand, 100% electric Tesla transportation in the Central Business District (CBD). The city upgraded its fleet in April from open air GEM Cars to the Tesla Model Y. On July 1, new Tesla Model X vehicles will debut, providing a more spacious interior for passengers. Additionally, the hours of operation will also be expanded with service until 11:59 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Coral Gables first partnered with Freebee in 2017 to provide a more convenient, sustainable, inclusive and connected future. The rideshare service offers free, on-demand rides in electric-powered vehicles to those requesting a ride from any location in the service area.

Rides are based on availability and must be booked through the Freebee app. Those that do not have a smart phone or need additional accessibility accommodation should contact Freebee dispatch at 855-918-3733.

The service operates seven days a week. The new hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Freebee offers connections to the Coral Gables Trolley system as well as to five Municipal Parking Garages and twelve surface lots, providing an opportunity for all to discover downtown Coral Gables.

Providing mobility solutions in the CBD is critical for the city since downtown is an important economic agent contributing 27% of the city’s ad valorem tax revenue. Additionally, this system helps reduce traffic congestion and enhances the quality of life.

Funding is provided by the City of Coral Gables and the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust and is augmented by paid advertisement in the Freebee app and vehicles. The upgrade to Tesla Model X vehicles was made possible through a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation Smart Transportation Grant.

The new vehicles provide customers with improved reliability, especially during inclement weather. Since launching the Tesla Y service in April, ridership has steadily increased, reaching 7,000 passengers in May.
