Fundraising campaign to support kids with development disabilities begins

Artist Romero Britto and Rachel Sapoznik, Sapoznik Insurance CEO and founder, launched the Open Your Heart to Art fundraising drive to benefit the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center on Sept. 25 at the artist’s new gallery, 1102 Lincoln Rd.

The proceeds from the sale of 11 sculptures, and custom mezuzah’s and canvases created by the renowned artist will support the expansion of after school classes and one-on-one therapy and provide additional family support programs. The JAFCO Children’s Ability Center is the only center of its kind in the country that offers overnight stays for children so parents can relax and refuel.

“JAFCO provides an amazing service to families with children with special needs,” said Sapoznik, who has been on the JAFCO board for several years. “Not only do the programs help the children overcome obstacles created by their disabilities, it provides families a support that many otherwise couldn’t afford,”

The Open Your Heart to Art campaign already has sold five sculptures, which vary in size from 27 inches to 81 inches in height. Britto and Sapoznik plan to sell the remaining works of art by Jan. 7, 2017, when the sculptures will be dedicated and placed on permanent display at the Children’s Ability Center, 5100 Nob Hill Road in Sunrise.

“It’s hard enough being a parent, but imagine having a child who has special needs,” Britto said. “There are so few places where parents can find programs for their children and that provide them the help they need to deal with these special circumstances.”
