The Rotary Club of Coral Gable annual Martin Hughes Citizen of the Year Award luncheon took place on May 22 at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables.
Past presidents Frank Sexton and Felix Pardo shared the podium to speak about the award winners, Rotary’s mission and the creation of the award named after a beloved member whose idea it was the hold such an event. What began as a single award is now two awards, one for an individual and another to recognize a corporate citizen.
A sold-out room greeted the year’s individual “Citizen of the Year” honoree, Mitch Kaplan.
Kaplan is best known as the founder of the Miami Book Fair that has been the standard that fairs from around the nation strive to replicate. His work with the Book Fair is just the tip of the iceberg when you consider his contributions to our community. On hand to share the day with him were his wife, Michelle, and Linda Carver.
As for the “Corporate Citizen of the Year,” Nicklaus Children’s Hospital received the honors.
Accepting the award for Nicklaus Children’s were senior vice president Jose Perdomo and president of Miami-Dade Market Ariana Urquia.
It seemed everyone at the luncheon had a story to share taking their children for medical care at this amazing pediatric hospital now is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
While the name has changed over the years, NCH’s care for children remakns unmatched.
