For many of us, going to the dentist can be a harrowing experience. With approximately 75 percent of adults in the U.S. reporting experiencing some degree of odontophobia, modern dental practitioners and technologists strive to make a visit to the dentist’s office as painless and less frightening as possible.

Sedation dentistry sits on the cutting edge of this movement and among those at the very forefront in implementing its most revolutionary procedures are the highly skilled specialists at Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry.

The practice, headed by Dr. Jorge Fornaris, DMD, and Dr. Ramiro Esparragoza, DDS, provides a comprehensive approach to oral health that emphasizes comfort, convenience and customized treatment. Whether you are there for a routine checkup or need full mouth reconstruction and dental implants, you will receive peak treatment with minimal discomfort in one location.

“Some people haven’t been to the dentist for up to 20 years and we can help restore their overall health, appearance and confidence,” Fornaris said. “We come up with a treatment plan based on their needs and can take care of everything right here. Usually this process would require that the patient visit five or six specialists. Here, between the two of us, we can provide full, comprehensive treatment and conduct all of the procedures under one roof.”

To ensure this, the “GDS Smile Team” employs state-of-the-art practices and equipment including a computerized tomography (CT) scan machine, which produces 3-D imaging of the patients head, allowing the doctors to simulate surgery before performing it on patients; laser assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP), a gum disease treatment that uses a laser instead of scalpels and sutures, minimizing post-operative discomfort, operation time, gum recession and accelerating post-operative recovery, and intravenous (IV) sedation, which is considerably more effective than traditional oral conscious and nitrous oxide sedation and guarantees the most ease possible to patients with even the most extreme aversions to dentistry.

“Many general practitioners offer sedation, but what they offer is a pill that still to this day produces mixed results,” Esparragoza said. “Intravenous sedation, which requires certification from the Florida Board of Dentistry, is the next level of sedation and allows us total control over the sedation process because we can bypass the gastric system and go straight to the bloodstream. This means that even though the amount of sedation used is actually less than the pill, the result is greater, more immediate and more quantifiable.”

The two doctors met while completing their Graduate Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at the University of Florida. After studying under the world-renowned Dr. Yagiela from the UCLA College of Dentistry’s Department of Anesthesiology, they decided to combine their complimentary areas of expertise — Fornaris in implant surgery, prosthetics, oral rehabilitation and soft and hard tissue management; Esparragoza in esthetics, complex dental rehabilitation and full mouth reconstruction.

New patients will first visit the pristine facility’s consultation room, where x-rays are taken, informative videos are viewed and the patients are shown their areas of concern with the help of a high-resolution Intra Oral camera. From there, a patient’s custom treatment may lead them to one of their many treatment rooms, two hygiene rooms (where they can receive LED light bleaching, among other procedures), a surgical suite or the cosmetic dentistry laboratory.

However, before their treatment begins, they are invited to fill out a “comfort menu” which personalizes their visit by identifying language, music, beverage and pillow and blanket preferences.

“It is extremely important that our patients remain as comfortable as possible,” said office manager Caroline Fornaris. “Every member of our team acts as an extension of our doctors’ professionalism and is trained to cater to patients’ specific needs and preferences.”

Dr. Jorge and Caroline Fornaris are great supporters of local charities including Live Like Bella, Blossoms Therapy and Walk for Autism Awareness. Dr. Esparragoza participates in Doctors Without Borders to provide dental care to those less fortunate in Peru and has an upcoming trip to Haiti planned for 2016.
