As part of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club centennial celebration events, 40 members and volunteers gathered on the grounds of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club clubhouse on June 24 to install 150 orchids in the trees on the property.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Million Orchid Project (MOP) director, biologist Dr. Jason Downing, brought several varieties of orchids, all of which require different amounts of sun and shade. For the participants helping out that early morning, it proved to be incredibly educational.
With ladders, zip ties, jute string, nail glue and orchids in hand, volunteers took direction from Dr. Downing working in teams and had the job done in less than two hours. Dr. Downing even returned the following week with a crew to install additional orchids with taller ladders to reach the higher locations.
While rainy season is upon us, this was a perfect time to take on this project as the orchids should get established quickly upon installation. This certainly will enhance the already beautiful historic site located at 1001-09 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. where so many book their weddings and special events.
Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s is proud to support the Million Orchid Project (MOP), the nation’s largest educational outreach program dedicated to orchid conservation, and encourages other clubs and businesses to do the same. Thus far, MOP has successfully propagated hundreds of thousands of native orchids. These are being planted in urban landscapes with the ultimate goal of reestablishing one million plants in the region.
