The 85th annual Coral Gables Garden Club May Luncheon recently held at the Riviera Country Club was attended by the largest crowd in the event’s history. The event began with a social hour with drinks and hors d’oeuvres being passed before everyone entered the dining room where the tables were decorated with both flowers and individual pictures of birds that are native to the Everglades. Event chair Joyce Davidson chose the luncheon theme of “Lure of the Everglades.”
After Davidson welcomed the crowd, co-chair Helen Hinds began with the Pledge of Allegiance and Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick sang the invocation with Jana White accompanying him on the piano. Anna Louise Fulks then introduced the six new members before lunch was served.
Guest speaker Toby Muir’s informative speech was on the Everglades, talking about Marjory Stoneman Douglas who was author of two books, The Everglades and River of Grass. In discussing the author Muir told how that he grew up in Coconut Grove next to the Douglas’ home and knew her extremely well.
After the talk and in keeping with the theme, Graham Miller sang an original composition about the Everglades. One of the highlights of the day was when Audrey Ross announced the recipient from Florida Southern College of the club scholarship fund that is in honor of Miss Lamar Louise Curry. The check for $32,000 is a full-year scholarship. The event closed with the installation of officers after which the new president, Kay Murff, gave her acceptance speech.
