GFWC clubs join effort to fund women’s suffrage monument

Aug. 18 marked the 105th anniversary of one of the most pivotal moments in women’s history — the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

This amendment granted women the right to vote, although it’s important to remember that not all women were included at the time. It wasn’t until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that Black women, along with other women of color, were fully guaranteed this fundamental right.

Now, for the first time in history, a national monument dedicated to women’s history will be built on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is serving as a national partner with the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation in its mission to fund and construct this long-overdue tribute to the courageous women who led the fight for voting rights.

GFWC has committed to raising $150,000 toward the project, and local clubs across the country are joining the effort. The monument not only will honor the past but also inspire future generations to protect and advance the rights so many fought to secure.

Gloria Burns
A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
