The General Federation of Women’s Club Florida (GFWC) president Linda O’Toole joined the District 11 women’s clubs for their annual District 11 meeting on Oct. 14.
The meeting, attended by 65 members from all over South Florida, provided O’Toole and GFWC state junior president Christa Nuckols, a chance to meet members. This gathering also served as a meeting to elect District 11’s new director, Ruth Martinez. Martinez, who currently is the president of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC), will follow Virginia Yermoli in that position.
The meeting, held at the historic CGWC clubhouse, also gave club presidents a chance to brag about all the many events and charitable work their members were involved with this past year with lots more activities to come.
Among the many attending the event were Karen Cunningham, Jena Staley, Toni Valarezo, Anita Jenkins, Barbara Lapsley, Linda Hartwell, Lynda Randolph and Elizabeth Fisher, Metris Batts, Lavette Moore, Brenda Merrill, Linda Joseph and Theresa Gilmore (the lucky raffle winner), to mention a few.
When it came time to brag, top on the list for Coral Gables Woman’s Club was its many Centennial events culminating with the club’s Roaring Twenties Centennial Gala on Dec. 2.
CGWC Centennial chair Robin Burr and Fundraising chair Rita Tennyson have been working nonstop to make this year special. The gala promises to be a spectacular affair and sponsorships are still available. Tickets to the gala alone are $225 per person and include a reception with appetizers provided by celebrity chef Chris Valdes, open bar compliments of Bacardi, silent auction, music, dinner by R Catering, dancing, nostalgic video and more. Twenties attire is encouraged and there may even be prizes for best dressed.

Leading up to the gala, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club has had many activities to keep its growing membership actively involved. Activities ranged from a Glam Night coordinated by Theresa Gilmore (ladies made their own organic face mask, deodorants, etc.) to its Oct. 27 Halloween mixer hosted by The Watermark to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic.
The event was orchestrated by Rita Tennyson.
Another Gringo Bingo, on Nov. 13, will be held at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen with proceeds being shared with the Alzheimer’s Association. For $30 donation, guests get entertained by emcee Steven Bradley and music by DJ Germain with one beer or wine and 12 games cards to play for great prizes. To RSVP, contact gloria@cnews.net.
In other non-profit news, on Oct. 14, Paws4You’s annual Howl-O-Ween took place at Pinecrest Gardens attracting pet lovers from all over the county to benefit Paws4You animal rescue mission. Despite some rain, a wonderfully festive, costumed crowd gathered at Pinecrest Gardens to enjoy a day with their doggies with lots of fun activities including a costume contest that was a great show.
Congratulations to Paws4You founder and CEO Carol Caridad and her amazing volunteers and staff including my longtime friend Cindy Gonzalez for all their efforts. More on that next time.
On the topic of great events, The Miami Woman’s Club held a wonderful fashion show on Sept. 30 in their beautifully renovated historic building. This fundraiser, to benefit Biscayne Bay Recovery effort and other MWC charitable programs, featured a short talk by Louis Aguirre, an Emmy-award winning journalist who anchors weekday newscasts and is renowned for serving as Channel 10’s Environmental Advocate.
Guests enjoyed a lovely display of lite bites by R Catering as well as Prosecco and more before the cheering on the fashion show models who came from a few different woman’s clubs in the district. Some incredibly beautiful fashions were provided by Miami Gift and Aurora Boutique. Kudos to MWC president Shirley Pardon and her club an outstanding first-time event that brought in approximately $7,500. In the future, this looks to be an annual event and one that will grow.
In other news, Coral Gables Woman’s Club is participating in Give Miami Day to support the club’s free children’s dental clinic and various other outreach efforts. Donations may be made at gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org as well as the club’s Instagram and FB pages. Of course, Give Miami Day is an opportunity to donate to several charities, so look how you can leverage for donations to your favorites.
Finally, congratulations to the Junior Orange Bowl’s new executive director, Madison Michel, who is now on board in the throes of Junior Orange Bowl Festival season.
