Grove Heritage is a monthly series of events and activities dedicated to celebrating the Grove’s rich history in honor of its 150th Anniversary. Established in 1873, the Village of Coconut Grove is Miami’s original neighborhood predating the city of Miami by nearly 25 years. Unique to the Grove is the still evident and living history of early African American and Bahamian culture.

The celebration of Coconut Grove’s role as Miami’s legacy village begins Friday, Jan. 6 on Fuller Street from 5 to 7 p.m., complimentary vegan-friendly cupcakes, live DJ, Coconut Grove historical reenactors, Bahamian junkanoo performers, and more surprises! Be sure to RSVP at:

Also at this time, residents and guests can participate in “Postcards to the Future” in honor of Jan. 6, 1873, when Dr. Horace Porter applied and was granted a post office for Coconut Grove. Attendees will be invited to write themselves postcards from Coconut Grove that will be mailed to them later in the year as a reminder of their intentions for 2023.

Then on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon, a HistoryMiami Walking Tour is being conducted by HistoryMiami museum’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement Ingrid E. Argueta; and Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George. Hear accounts of some of the Grove’s early settlers and learn how Bahamian pioneers here influenced the development of the Grove with their knowledge of tropical plants and native building materials.

Later on, make your way to the Grove Heritage Day concert at The Barnacle, on Saturday, Jan. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. – for a live performance by Grant Livingston on the very grounds of the historic home built by Coconut Grove pioneer Commodore Ralph Munroe during the Era of the Bay.
