As we welcome fall and our “cooler” months, Tropical Audubon Society again opens its historic Doc Thomas House to the community for free monthly tours.

The charming 1932 house underwent extensive structural restoration and repair from 2020 to 2021 with more to come.

Enjoy a captivating, one-hour guided tour led by a Tropical Audubon docent. Learn about TAS patron and area pioneer Arden Hayes “Doc” Thomas and Robert Fitch Smith, the architect commissioned to design the charming Florida vernacular cottage, distinguished by its native woods and limestone features. Hear about the story of Tropical Audubon and local history.

In addition to an indoor talk and tour of interior rooms, your visit will include an outdoor walk to view the home’s unique exterior features.

As a bonus, stroll the society’s bird-friendly pollinator gardens and near-native Steinberg Nature Center campus.

Monthly tours are offered every first Saturday through May at 1 and 3 p.m. The Doc Thomas House is located at 5530 Sunset Dr. (near South Miami) and there is limited onsite parking via the SW 55th Avenue auto gate.
