Hotel Colonnade to host breakfast to benefit charities

Nine local charities already have signed up to participate in this year’s annual Scoops of Hope Breakfast scheduled for Wednesday, July 26, 7:30–10:30 a.m., at the Hotel Colonnade in Coral Gables.

The annual event to benefit Give Kids the World Village and participating local charities has raised thousands of dollars every year to support worthy programs and initiatives, from Coral Gables Rotary’s veterans programs and South Miami Rotary’s outreach efforts to Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s free children’s dental clinic.

As of this writing, several vendors have signed up to support the effort purchasing display tables. These include HV Designs, Artful Fashions DBA Roxana Zubia, Coral Gables Hospital, Florida Dairy Farmers and DOCA Business Group (Nuzion organic quinoa and chia seeds).

Tickets may be purchased through local participating charities that keep 50 perent of the $10 ticket price while the other 50 percent is directed to Give Kids the World, a 70-acre resort in the Orlando area that provides a free week’s vacation for children with life threatening illnesses accompanied by their entire family. GKTW is a pet charity of the Hotel Colonnade that has hosted events year after year to support this resort as well as local charities.

Those looking to participate or purchase tickets may send email to gloria@cnews.net or call 305-968-3090. Tickets also will be available at the door.

On Wednesday, July 19, the GFWC Cocoplum Woman’s Club will host a review, given by Rosann Whitten, of the book Prince Charles, The Passions and Paradoxes of An Improbable Life. Admission is $20 with proceeds benefiting Patches, PPEC Nursing Center for Children.

Cocoplum Woman’s Club is located at 1375 Sunset Dr. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and promises to provide a very entertaining morning. For information or reservations, call Anita Jenkins at 305-665-6762 or send email to ajtrav2644@att.net.

Former Coral Gables Mayor Dorothy Thomson was recognized recently with the unveiling ceremony for a plaque installed at City Hall in her honor as the first and, thus far, only female mayor of the city. Mayor Raul Valdes Fauli, former Mayor Jim Cason, and city manager Cathy Rivenbark were among those who addressed the crowd to praise Dorothy for her positive impact on the city during her terms in office as well as her leadership in numerous non profit organizations.

Historic Preservation director Donna Spain also presented Dorothy with a beautifully framed recognition gift. Thomson was elected mayor in 1985 and, coincidentally, this is her 85th birthday year, so a birthday cake surrounded by current and past commissioners, friends, and family topped off the party with food and cake for all assembled.

In other news, A Safe Haven for Newborns raised more than $500 with a reception at Kendra Scott at Brickell City Center on June 22.

Twenty percent of the more than $3,000 in sales that night was donated to Safe Haven, an organization that has saved more than 262 infants from abandonment thus far. At the affair, guests enjoyed champagne, snacks and playing with the digital color bar touch screen that allows customers to design their own jewelry that can be made in one hour.

Store manager Brittany Benavidez was on hand with ASHFN’s Nick Silverio and Marti Bueso to welcome the crowd of supporters and board members including Efrain and Roxana Sora (who was attired her own art, a beautiful elegant tunic), Alina Barrios, Nella Watanabe, Adriana Simon Parra and Orestes Simon, Dunia and Frank Cuneo, Cindy Delgado, Mara Falero, Paula Franco, Sally Villalba, Carlos and Judy Ruiz, AMR’s Dave Sanford and Robert White, Sara Armesto, Isabel Cristina Martin, Nancy La, Scott Cabrera, Mirta Fuentes, Emily Bahamonde, and Gina Perez.

CGWC members recently toured NCL’s Norwegian Sky that will be making four-day cruises to Cuba. CGWC member Diane Superville and NCL’s Christopher Cardena orchestrated this tour and lunch for some local nonprofit representatives. Clubs and NPOs may find this to be a good cultural experience, a retreat and/or serve as a fundraiser. Among the CGWC members attending with this writer were Deborah Van Stone Moore and Arely Ruiz who were highly impressed with the amenities and food.

Until next time, keep making each day count.
