William “Bill” Archer, the beloved co-founder of The Big Cheese in Miami, passed away on February 21, 2025, at the age of 65. A man with an enormous heart and an unwavering dedication to his community, Bill spent over four decades creating a place where people could gather, share a meal, and feel at home. His kindness, generosity, and passion for great food made an impact far beyond the walls of his restaurant.

In 1984, alongside his dear friend and business partner, Garry Duell, Bill opened The Big Cheese. What started as a small pizza shop quickly became a Miami institution, known not just for its delicious Italian dishes but for its welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. Whether it was families celebrating milestones, University of Miami fans enjoying a pre-game meal, or locals looking for comfort food, The Big Cheese became a special gathering place, thanks to Bill’s vision and warm hospitality.

Bill’s impact stretched far beyond the restaurant industry. He was a dedicated community supporter, always eager to give back in any way he could. His generosity shone through in his work with the University of Miami, where The Big Cheese provided meals to student-athletes and their competitors, ensuring everyone felt cared for. When disaster struck, Bill stepped up—donating food and resources to those in need, including providing meals for emergency responders and displaced families after Hurricane Irma. He believed deeply in using his success to support others, and his kindness left a lasting imprint on Miami.

More than anything, Bill was a people person. He had a way of making everyone feel like family, whether they were longtime customers, employees, or first-time visitors. He built relationships over shared meals and laughter, and his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. His generosity, humor, and unwavering dedication to his community will never be forgotten.

Bill is survived by his loving family, devoted friends, and the many patrons who became an extension of his own family over the years. While his absence leaves a deep void, his spirit will continue to live on through the restaurant he built, the kindness he shared, and the memories he created.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on March 14th at 1 p.m. at Christ the King Church in Miami. Friends, family, and members of the community are invited to gather, share stories, and honor the life of a truly special man.

Bill, thank you for the love, the laughter, and the meals shared. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of kindness, generosity, and great food will live on in the hearts of those who knew you.
