The Junior Orange Bowl hosted its inaugural international fencing tournament during the weekend of Sept. 28 and 29 at Florida International University.
Some 110 competitors including clubs located across the state of Florida, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia and Puerto Rico gathered to compete in sabre, epee, and foil categories. The tournament also drew some of the most competitive and experienced fencers in the world as coaches and former members of the Cuban Olympic fencing team, and members of the Puerto Rican National fencing team were in attendance. The Miami Fencing Club and Florida International University served as co-hosts of the event.
More than 12 Men’s, Women’s, Children, and Mixed sabre, foil, and epee competitions ensued over the two-day competition. Winners included Matt Simmons from the Miami Fencing Club, Gustavo Serrano of the Club de Esgrima de Puerto Rico, Jordan Griffith from the Naples Fencing Club, Jose Rosario from the Club de Esgrima de Puerto Rico, Alexis Tate from the Sarasota Fencing Academy and Club, Dennis Russanov from the Gold Coast Florida Division, Isaac Ariza of the Masters Fencing Club, Sarah Rahman of the Epee Miami Fencing Club, Daniel Mejia-Ruiz of the Masters Fencing Club, Kyle Hernandez of the Club de Esgrima de Puerto Rico, and Luis Bretones of the Florespa Fencing Club. The fencing competition is one of more than 15 athletic, academic, and cultural events hosted by the Junior Orange Bowl. The Junior Orange Bowl festival is celebrating its 65th “Diamond Jubilee” Anniversary and is proud to welcome fencing as another International event.
