Most people like stability, routine, and a sense of control over their lives. Individuals crave some steady ground to walk on, assurance that everything will be alright, a desire for safety and security, and the knowledge of how life will play out. One thing is for sure, life can be unpredictable and difficult. It is important to take the time to sit with the uncertainty and to focus on what can be controlled. The L.E.A.N. Framework, when consciously implemented, creates an awareness of the skills necessary to move through challenges in a productive way.
LET IT BE:
Letting go of tough situations is often too much to ask but setting an intention to let things be and move past them is more manageable. Holding on to negativity impedes personal growth and the ability to move forward. Wishing things were different doesn’t change things. To move through challenging circumstances, it is essential to focus on the following actions:
- Stop blaming others.
-
- Focus on what you can control.
- Trust you will be okay.
- Create moments of quiet.
EMPOWER:
You have the capability of making hard decisions. Feeling powerless to change things is a mindset that can undermine your physical and emotional mental health. “Stinking Thinking” is disempowering and keeps you stuck. Managing expectations, taking risks to move forward, and facing reality will help you see how your challenges are rarely as bad as you think. When you find yourself in situations over which you feel you have little control, encourage yourself to attempt the below actions:
- Look for the good that does exist.
- Practice pausing before reacting to others.
-
- Focus on staying in your own power by remaining calm.
- Ask for what you believe you need.
- Set healthy boundaries.
- Be mindful of not making requests of people who are incapable of responding appropriately.
- Make yourself a priority.
ACCEPT:
When you make a conscious effort to stop fighting reality and resenting those aspects of your life that aren’t the way you want them to be, you leave a space for acceptance (acknowledging, not approving). Pausing to explore what you are feeling and recognizing what is and where you can react and respond accordingly is where your control lies. Achieving acceptance can be manifested in the following ways:
-
- Prior to reacting to a challenging situation, ask yourself if you are fighting or resisting reality.
- Make an internal commitment to stop defying what is.
- Use signals from your body such as your heart rate or breath to help guide you.
- Focus on how to come to terms with the reality of the situation.
NOURISH:
Often individuals let life happen to them without daily check-ins. Making self-care a priority allows you to connect to your own sense of meaning and enhances your strength and resiliency during challenging times. Being supportive towards yourself requires focusing on these skills:
-
- Find comfort in daily rituals like meditation to enhance your ability to feel centered.
- Make self-compassion a priority.
-
- Focus on what is good.
- Feed your body with wholesome foods.
- Move.
- Practice intentional kindness to yourself and others.
It is important to allow yourself the space to feel your emotions, acknowledge the reality of them, and to take healthy and productive action. Setting the intention of using the L.E.A.N. Framework will enhance your ability to move through periods of uncertainty in a more effective and beneficial way.
