Music lovers and festival goers might recognize Miami as the land of Ultra Music Festival but beyond the city of Miami lies the city of Miami Gardens and its iconic Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, that boasts enough space to host events such as the Miami Open tennis tournament, Miami Grand Prix and the annual event for R&B, soul and jazz lovers, Jazz in the Gardens (JITG.)
In 2006, just four years after Miami Gardens became a city, JITG was created as a way to foster community and share passion for culture through music. Described by Miami Gardens’ second-term Mayor Rodney Harris as the “second largest Jazz music festival on the East Coast”, JITG was founded by the city’s first mayor, Shirley Gibson. The festival humbly held its first concert in a small parking lot but has since then evolved to a massive festival, attracting 30,000+ fans from both the U.S. and internationally. Past headliners have included stars, such as Summer Walker, Jazmine Sullivan, Babyface and more. However, one of the many reasons why visitors return to Miami Gardens is its ”hospitality,” said Mayor Harris.
“People visiting Miami Gardens look forward to the food, from Caribbean to all over the world cuisine,” said Mayor Harris. Over time, the festival has expanded to include spaces for local eateries and food trucks to sell their popular menu items during the two-day event, offering everything from barbecue and kebabs to vegan-friendly dishes and desserts.
From an economical standpoint, artists have been known to boost the U.S. economy, generating billions in revenue and revitalizing local tourism through hotel stays, restaurants and other tourism expenses. Factors contributing to economic growth include employment, in-direct sales and a heightened demand for public transportation and ride sharing apps. As Mayor Harris estimates the festival brings in the “high millions” each year.
This year’s JITG brought out, Ms. Lauryn Hill, the first woman to ever win Best Album at the Grammys, and performances included Doechii, who was recently honored with the same award, flying all the way from Paris Fashion Week to not miss the performance with her Idol. Additional performances included brothers Zion Marley and YG Marley, who joined their mother on stage to perform their big hits “Best of Me” and “Praise Jah in The Moonlight.” Toni Braxton’s dazzling performance reminded the crowd why the Grammy-Winning singer is the queen of timeless R&B magic.
More than music, the future plans of the festival will involve more experiential activations and that may or may not include a new development coming that would cater to visitors at the Hard Rock Stadiums with new hotels and a Formula One museum. At this time, there are no updates on its expected completion.
