Memory disorder expert Marc Agronin, M.D., will talk about his new book “The End of Old Age: Living a Longer, More Purposeful Life” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables, 33134.

Through Dr. Agronin’s work on the front line at Miami Jewish Health, he sees both the sickest and the healthiest of seniors, what works and what doesn’t. All the latest scientific research combined with Dr. Agronin’s first-hand experience can be distilled into a simple and yet unheard of formula: age is the solution and not the problem for many late-life changes and challenges. This approach stops looking at aging as an implacable enemy, but casts it instead as a potential developmental force for enhancing well-being, meaning, and longevity.

An internationally recognized geriatric psychiatrist and author of numerous books, including “How We Age,” Dr. Agronin is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal “The Experts” blog. In his books, he addresses the scientific, medical and human side of aging through the stories and lives of his patients. He is vice president for behavior health and clinical research at Miami Jewish Health, where he also is founder of the Memory Center.

Dr. Agronin is a major force behind The S. Donald Sussman EmpathiCare Village at Miami Jewish Health, which broke ground on the project in December. The state-of-the-art residential complex, which is expected to open in 2021, will be the first support residence of its kind in the world for the care of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory-related disorders. The village-like setting will create an environment in which residents and their families can continue to experience many of the joys of daily living.

Miami Jewish Health is one of the most innovative healthcare providers in the United States, treating annually more than 12,000 people of all ages, ethnicities and religions. The 77-year-old institution draws patients from across the nation and around the world for its pioneering Centers of Excellence that include: Rosomoff Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center; Memory Center; Rehabilitation Services at Miami Jewish Health’s’ Nursing Facility; and the Florida PACE Centers (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly).
