Media get preview of Havana Music Hall at Actors' Playhouse

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre pulls off another coup with the World Premiere of Havana Music Hall, a musical that is sure to make you laugh, cry and want to dance.

During rehearsals Richard Kagan, who wrote the music, lyrics and story, shared the background on hos the show came to be. With encouragement from his actress wife, Julie Hagerty, Kagan looked into several options in his quest to write a musical and came upon information on a Cuban musician, Jose Hernandez, whom he miraculously found in California.

It turns out that Jose’s story and what he endured after the revolution in Cuba was compelling and inspiring. Thus, it became the story for the musical and one that resonates with countless immigrants from countries where freedom comes at a huge cost. This show is a must see and it promises to warm your heart and make you appreciate our country and what many endure to overcome tyrannical regimes.

By the way, Kagan is a big supporter of no-kill animal shelters and will be looking to support those efforts locally. For $20 at the shows you may purchased an adorable white stuffed dogs adorned with a hat with a musical note, a souvenir for the premiere that will benefit an appropriate shelter or organization. If you attend the show, help save a pet by picking up one or two for your kids.

Tickets start at $30 and group rates are available for this show. Call 305-444-9293.

Aside from the theater, there are many other upcoming events that promise to be fun. The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club is preparing for its Halloween Haunted Mansion Party to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic. Chairing this year’s event are Barbara Lapsley and Marilyn Smit who advise all to come in costumes and prepare for a night to remember. If you are looking for a great Halloween party, you can get a jump on the festivities at this Oct. 20 annual affair that offers everything from a deejay with dancing and games to contests for best costumes and more. Tickets at $35 per person include food and a cash bar and may be purchased at the door for $40.
