For Mey-ling Perez life has been a journey of transformations, both physical and emotional, and her new book, Amar, Perder y Renacer, explores this in both poetry and prose that is highly personal and evocative.
Written in Spanish, the book, her first, takes readers through three stages of the human condition, Love, Loss, and Rebirth, with the ultimate conclusion that even after heartbreak and tragedy it is possible to emerge stronger than before.
Perez was born in a small town near Havana, Cuba. Growing up in a country cut off from the rest of the world led her to use her imagination as a form of escape. She wrote her first story at age 7.
Perez immigrated to Miami in 1994, where she ultimately pursued a career in finance.
Successful at that, she now is a senior vice president for First Horizon Bank, working at the Brickell office. But while for the past 22 years her “world” has been about lending and investments, that early urge to write remained.
“I’m a firm believer of working both sides of your brain and I’ve always said that as far back as I can remember I’ve always had some type of creative gene,” Perez said. “I dabble in photography and painting and I used to write a lot when I was younger. I think the past three years with COVID — and not to say I had extra time on my hands because I think I was working more than ever — but it gave a lot of us the ability to focus on other things that also make us whole.”
When the contents of Amar, Perder y Renacer started coming together and Perez decided to go ahead and make a book, the cover also took shape in her mind — the image of a heart, broken but mended, repaired with gold. She had a female Ukrainian artist create her rendition of it, and Perez was pleased with how it turned out.
“The Japanese art of Kintsugi, the inspiration for the cover, proves that even after an object breaks, its value can exponentially increase. In this same fashion, the human heart can shine ever so brightly after difficult experiences and life lessons.”
Mey-ling Perez officially will launch her book at Books & Books in Coral Gables on Saturday Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. To reserve a seat at the free event, go to https://www.booksandbooks.com/event/en-espanol-en-persona-una-noche-con-mey-ling-perez/.

“I’m a firm believer that if you’re going through a bad time you should really use that energy and put it to something good,” Perez said, “That’s how I feel with this entire book. It’s been this incredible energized moment for me.”
