WHAT: 2022 Miami White Cane Day Walk and Ceremony

DETAILS: Elected officials and other community leaders will join more than 150 blind and visually impaired Miami residents, Miami Lighthouse Academy students and their parents, teachers, and adult clients learning to live productive lives despite their uncorrectable vision loss, for a walk on the streets of Miami and a celebration in commemoration of White Cane Day.
White Cane Day is a national observance, established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of the blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
The program will begin with participants, escorted and led by City of Miami Police Department Mounted Units, City of Miami Fire Department, the Miami Jackson Senior High Color Guard, and Billy The Marlin, walking together from the Miami Lighthouse campus, down Southwest 8th Street and back. The celebration will continue at Miami Lighthouse with food and music, featuring performers from the Miami Lighthouse Music Program.
The event will be emceed by Jammin’ Johnny Caride, of EL ZOL 106.7 FM with
lunch sponsored by McDonald’s. A Field Representative from Guiding Eyes for the Blind located in White Plains, New York will join CEO Virginia Jacko as she works with her new guide dog, Brava, bred and trained in New York, on how to navigate the intersections in Little Havana. Eva, her current guide dog is retiring.
