Dr. Joseph Lamelas, an internationally recognized surgeon in minimally invasive heart surgery, is the Chief of Cardiac Surgery and Professor of Surgery at The University of Miami Health System, Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Lamelas has been in practice for more than 33 years and has completed more than 18,000 cardiac surgical operations in his career. He has an active clinical practice, performing approximately 700 cardiac surgical cases per year and considered one of the busiest cardiac surgeons in North America. Dr. Lamelas has played a significant role in advancing the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, as well as developing facilitating instruments to perform these procedures. These instruments were part of a company he founded named “Miami Instruments”. He has trained more than 1000 physicians from around the world in minimally invasive cardiac surgery over the last 18 years.
While he practices all facets of cardiac surgery, his main focus over the past 20 years has been minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr. Lamelas has developed techniques to facilitate minimally invasive approaches for repairing congenital cardiac defects, removal of cardiac tumors, aortic valve surgery, mitral valve surgery, double and triple valve surgery, as well as replacing the ascending aorta without splitting the sternum. He is the first surgeon in the world to perform a replacement of the ascending aorta and hemi-arch via a mini right lateral thoracotomy and since, has performed over 500 of these procedures. He has an “all comers” approach to minimally invasive surgery, with very few exclusion criteria. He has a passion for mitral valve repair and has had a greater than 99% repair rate. With his dedication to excellence in mitral repair, the University of Miami joins another 21 hospitals in the country that have received the prestigious “Mitral Valve Reference Center Award” for many consecutive years. Dr. Lamelas has developed a world recognized approach to minimally invasive cardiac surgery named “The Miami Method”. With this, he claims that he wanted Miami to be recognized world round as a destination for not only cardiac surgery, but also minimally invasive cardiac surgery. His pioneered approach to cardiac surgery is now celebrating its 20 year anniversary and has saved countless of lives. He considers this the least invasive approach to address surgical cardiac disease with all of these surgeries performed via a 4-5 cm (less than 2 inch) incision on the side of the chest. Furthermore, his operative outcomes, across all risk categories have been excellent, demonstrating one of the highest survivals, lowest length of stay and lowest readmission rates in the country. He has been awarded the highest star ratings for not only mitral valve surgery, but also aortic valve surgery, by the Society of (Cardiac and) Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Lamelas is board certified in thoracic surgery and a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and is also a fellow in the American Board of Surgery. He has also received certification in Surgical Critical Care. He has lectured both nationally and internationally and his work in the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery has been extensively published, authoring and co-authoring hundreds of peer reviewed articles.
Dr. Lamelas is a well respected, and recognized Cardiac Surgeon, and states that Cardiac Surgery has been his passion and calling. He admits that his ultimate reward has been great patient outcomes and acknowledges that this has been the result of many years of hard work, which has allowed him to gain a wealth of experience. He humbly claims that his life has revolved around the perfection of his craft, Cardiac Surgery.
