The Miami Touchdown Club celebrated its annual Scholar Athlete and National Football Foundation Team of Distinction Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, July 19.
The Touchdown Club event, held at Duffy’s Sports Grill Kendall, featured guest speaker Joaquin Gonzalez, a highly decorated Columbus High School scholar-athlete who later played at the University of Miami and went on to the NFL, from 2002 to 2006, playing the Browns and the Colts.
The star of the day, however, was quarterback Max Lawrence who recently graduated from Westland Hialeah Senior High School. Lawrence was presented with Miami Touchdown Club’s Scholar Athlete Award and the National Football Foundation (NFF) Team of Distinction Award. The Miami Touchdown Club is the local chapter member of NFF.
Lawrence’s academic record is impressive. He graduated with a 4.81 GPA, was on the Presidential Honor Roll, and is a Bright Futures Scholarship recipient. While maintaining his academic standing, he also was a co-captain of the school’s varsity football team and was captain of “Hard Knocks” seven on seven football team. He was seven times Max Preps Player of the Game. Like Gonzalez, Lawrence is moving slated to attend and play for the University of Miami Hurricanes.
Among the many sharing the day with Max were his dad, Teig Lawrence; Miami Touchdown Club volunteer executive director John Steinbauer, and Miami Touchdown Club president Jeff Schneider.
