The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County celebrates 15 years of Flamenco Festival Miami from March 1-14, 2024. One of the largest celebrations of flamenco in the world, Flamenco Festival Miami will feature eight thrilling performances from Spain’s most outstanding performers throughout the month of March. The illustrious Ballet Nacional de España headlines with three performances (March 1-3) in the Ziff Ballet Opera House and the Stars of Flamenco close out the festival on March 14 in the Knight Concert Hall. The 2024 festival will also include four intimate performances in the Carnival Studio Theater celebrating the music of flamenco. Each evening will feature a guitar virtuoso and a guest dancer, including a cameo by 2023’s standout, Malaga-born, Miami-based dancer Irene Lozano.

Ballet Nacional de España, Spain’s premier flamenco dance company, opens the annual festival, which has reached an audience over 1 million internationally. For 45 years, Ballet Nacional de España (BNE) has been bringing the history of Spanish dance to life while remaining true to the nation’s spirit of innovation and artistry. The company’s repertoire includes classic 20th century works as well as bold new choreographies such as Invocación, a program created by BNE director Rubén Olmo that salutes past masters of the castanet-driven style known as “Escuela Bolera.” The company will perform Invocación and several other original works that combine flamenco, ballet and stylized dance.

The festival weekend will also include intimate performances in the Carnival Studio Theater featuring Antonio Rey and guest dancer Irene Lozano “La Chiqui” on March 1. Latin Grammy winner Antonio Rey is one of the top flamenco guitarists of his generation, dazzling audiences around the world with his soulful and powerful performances and compositions. For his Miami presentation, Rey features Miami-based dancer Irene Lozano, one of the greatest talents in the new generation of flamenco dance. Lozano weaves traditional elements of flamenco, modern dance and ballet in a sophisticated way. On March 2, guitarist Alejandro Hurtado, known for his exceptional technique, clean execution and expressive power, is joined in his Miami debut by the majestic Inmaculada Salomón, currently first dancer of Ballet Nacional de España. Later that day, Rycardo Moreno, a noted flamenco and jazz guitarist who started playing music at 11 years old, is joined by electrifying dancer José Maya, who has opened for Marc Anthony, Beyoncé and Björk. In another Miami first, guitarist José Fernández, aka “José del Tomate,” and soul-stirring dancer Karime Amaya – both descendants of flamenco legends – round out the Carnival Studio Theater performances.

To close out the 15th annual festival on March 14, Stars of Flamenco will feature some of Spain’s greatest dancers – Manuel Liñán, Alfonso de Losa, “El Yiyo” and Paula Comitre – with Sandra Carrasco as guest vocalist. Known as mavericks of the flamenco world, Liñan (who most recently presented ¡VIVA! at the Arsht to critical acclaim in 2022) and Losa, winner of the prestigious Festival de Jerez Critic’s Choice Award, join forces to embody flamenco’s history through dance. They are joined by 27-year-old talent, Miguel Fernández Ribas, a rising star in flamenco known as “El Yiyo,” and Paula Comitre, one of the most celebrated talents of the contemporary flamenco world. Sandra Carrasco is one of the most versatile singers of her generation and an artist who has expanded flamenco’s global influence through her collaboration with artists such as Anoushka Shankar and Richard Bona.

For those wanting to enjoy at taste of Spain while at the Arsht, the Center’s on-site restaurant Teatro and its Accent Café will be offering a special sangria, the Andalucía, as well as “huevos rotos,” a delectable Spanish dish made with house made chips, sliced jamon Iberico, truffled cheddar and a fried egg.

Tickets to the Arsht Center’s Flamenco Festival Miami range from $25 – $135. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit arshtcenter.org.
